Please share with us briefly what you do.

I am currently the CEO of TraitQuest. Here is what I do; Thinking of the next exciting ways to create gamification guides and execution plan from A-Z for companies. Managing a group of marketers, business developers, and developers and keeping them in mind most of the time. You may even see me running workshops on behavior psychology for HR leaders who wish to form stronger bonds among their teams. You'd be surprised to see who my audience is, from the very young to the elderly, who want to improve their engagement and communication skills with their teams.


What were you doing before this?

I was serving in various MNC before TraitQuest. I worked with Hewlett Packard Malaysia and Singapore from 2008 till 2014, where I grew the revenue channel from $1 million to $10 million as the sales strategist. Then, I joined Microsoft in 2014. I developed the strategic partnership division with various partners to enable all Notebooks and Desktop preloaded with Microsoft Windows and Office software. In 2016, I was chosen by AirAsia to be part of their AirAsia Big Loyalty Commercial Division. In my journey, I learned that building people is number one because they will build the business.


Describe your product. How does it work?

We are offering three unique products;

i) TraitQuest Gamification SaaS

ii) Gamification Workshop & Consulting

iii) Trait Assessment


TraitQuest Gamification SaaS is a modular-based gamification software that allows enterprises to create and use gamification elements like rewards, performance, e-learning solutions, and game-based KPI for their teams.

                          


We help companies struggling to find new ways to increase motivation and performance and promote positive behavioral changes among their employees. We do this via a personalized trait assessment and follow up with actionable and gamified workshop sessions to produce a long-term execution strategy.


For Trait Assessment wise, our team will help generate a trait report based on a 108 questionnaire assessment. Top behavioral scientists and psychologists design these questions to help you understand your trait better. You will be getting a detailed trait report that allows you to make a better decision on your career, goals, and relationships. Plus, weaknesses and strengths that you can emphasize on.


                                          


What are the key benefits?

Several key benefits of our services are; implementing effective gamification will be easy as we have templates available. Employers no longer need to run through spreadsheets to determine the best employee and employees who need help in their work. Employers can take advantage of the automated reward systems to promote a rewarding workplace experience for their employees. Most importantly, using the appreciation system and sharing tremendous uplift of positivity among the team despite the current climate.


Who are your closest competitors?

I would say SelfDrvn, but what made us different is; We provide a proven gamification strategy beyond our SaaS that is proven to solve some of the most challenging motivation-related issues among our client's team.


Who is your first customer, and how did that happen? What were they using before

this, and why did they switch?

Our first customer was Dexon Electrical Engineering. Before that, we adopted a trial version for some clients testing for 3-6 months where we first launch. Dexon Electrical Engineering was the 1st paying client, and their requirement was developed over time as an add-on.


Around the same time, I met my mentor, Lawrence Yap. They have been looking for a comprehensive performance system that includes Remote Time Attendance ( multiple remote locations). They have been relying on manual and excel processes, which had taken much of their tedious operational time. Efficiency and effectiveness were two of the top reasons they embarked on TraitQuest. (Who? Lawrence or Dexon?)


What motivated you to start this business?

You probably know that many people feel demotivated, unappreciated, and depressed about their work. It's a problem since the very creation of work itself. It's no stranger, and it could you, your friends, or your family who is facing this.


The reality is; Majority of employees felt that work itself is not a rewarding and purposeful journey besides putting food on the table, which is a chore for many adults. We also cannot ignore the fact that there are happy and rewarding workplaces out there like Google, Hubspot, and more. The very essence of introducing purpose, reward, and meaning while embracing real human connection at work makes people happier. And that alone motivates me the most to go out there to solve it.


What is your biggest sacrifice to make this work?

Before officially launching TraitQuest, I had to quit my job and fully commit to my new venture. My journey has been filled with obstacles; it is still but much more manageable than in the past. I did not take a single salary at the start for 12 months, and I believe most startup founders undergo a similar rite as I did. I remembered neglecting my family and friends to see through my venture. If I were to do it again, I would manage my expectations and prepare myself much better before any venture.


How did you get funded?

We met our initial angel investors through multiple efforts and events. I wouldn't call it funded because we are still in the journey to grow and expand more. Our investors and shareholders have been supportive and provided us with valuable knowledge and expertise in our industry. To sum up, the whole experience of getting our shareholder would be to keep hustling and believing in the team. End of the day, it's a collective effort, and we are still striving to achieve our goals.


What has been your most successful form of marketing?

I would say probably Facebook, LinkedIn, and several press releases. Our local news website, Vulcan Post, released an article featuring TraitQuest, covering our story and journey in 2017. That momentum created a lot of our early customers who are still using our services to date. Plus, they have recommended us among their friends, which also resulted in more customers.

Who has been the greatest influence in your business and why?

My team and mentors are the most significant influence. They have been providing unconditional support, which keeps the business flourishing. That motivation will be undoubtedly my most significant drive in pursuing the vision for TraitQuest. The road to success is a lonely path without your team and valuable support from close ones and those who continue believing the same vision.


What has been your proudest moment in the history of your business, and why?

My top source of inspiration comes from people who give back to society. I believe in staying positive, instead of cynical. If I may quote 'A person who gives and expects nothing in return.'. With that, I want to say my proudest moment where TraitQuest being recognized as the industry subject matter experts and sharing the practices are some of those areas which made our efforts approved.


What is your favorite business failure (and what did you learn from it)?

Making a decision and decisions that matters are some of the business lessons I’m still learning. I would say sometimes we have huge tendencies to make decisions that cost the business, revenues, or sales.


If you could go back in time to speak to your 20-year-old self, what would you tell

him/her?

Experience and learn all you can because those are some lost time which I’d missed out. All these valuable lessons are the foundation of how we make decisions, problem-solving and managing the expectations of others. I would also ask my 20-year-old self to get a mentor and seek all advices required to be successful in my life
