Kek Sei Wee, CEO/Founder at IoTalents

1.     Please share with us briefly what you do.

I'm the founder and CEO of IoTalents.  (https://www.iotalents.com)

We are an online community and platform for Hirers and IT Workforce (Employees, Contract workers and Virtual Talents) to intelligently connect and transact. We deliver niche candidates in an extremely prompt fashion, through a precise combination of data science and human expertise. We are a HR Tech start up building useful recruitment technologies: profiling technologies, algorithmic matching and talent mapping to guarantee success. Our team is also immensely passionate about the trend on the Contingent Workforce model and believes that the exploding shared economy of global IT talents will reshape the workforce of the future.

2.     What were you doing before this?

I've spent years in the Management and IT Consulting space. I founded a boutique consultancy firm in 2006 and grew it into an IT service provider, which partners with best-in-class software companies to serve organisations in the commercial and government sectors.

3.     Describe your product. How does it work?

We have recently launched Jobs007™ (http://jobs007.io), one of Asia's first referral based job app platform that maps the workforce to employers on demand. We do this through our incentive / referral based mobile app, Jobs007, leveraging on the powerful benefits of professional network to grow our talent pool in a viral fashion. We use Talenlytics™ (our proprietary recruitment technology that uses intelligence and big data to improve the market place efficiency) to assess and build up data points on the candidates, before matching them to exciting jobs (permanent, contract and freelance).

4.     What are the key benefits?

Today, most people have smart phones and with job tenure going shorter, this presents a vast opportunity for us. With Jobs007, the referral model create a frictionless mechanism of rapidly growing a large pool of candidates, and talent map them to jobs. Powering our app marketplace, Talenlytics can profile and interview applicants with artificial intelligence. This gives us over hundreds of data points that we can analyze and then feed our matching algorithms. With this, we are setting the basis for the most powerful predictive algorithm that in the industry and the future of recruitment

5.     What motivated you to start this business?

I was facing a lot of challenges hiring and finding good tech resource during those years building my IT company. In 2015, me and my co-founders decided to do something about this and the idea for IoTalents was seeded.

6.     How did you get funded?

We are started with seed funding by myself and my co-founders: Eric (an IT industry veteran ) and Michelle (an award winning professor in a local university). Along the way, we have onboarded other like-minded investors who believe in our vision and mission. We raised our pre-series funding round recently.

 7.     What has been your most successful form of marketing?

The power of network marketing and word of 'mouth' (both offline and online) have been very successful, reinforcing the most powerful truth in marketing: Your biggest marketing asset is your existing customer base or community. In fact, it has worked so well for us that we spun off the idea to build an online referral based solution for the recruitment industry.

8.   Who has been the greatest influence in your business and why?

My current cofounders are so successful in their respective professional careers and have been great mentors in guiding and shaping my personal and business development.

I also look up to and draw inspirations from public personas who have the unique ability to apply lateral thinking / dare-to-be-different attitude and perspectives to everything they do. Examples are leaders like Richard Branson, and Ricardo Semler – famed for running a company with (almost) no rules.

 9.   What has been your proudest moment in the history of your business and why?

I’m proudest of the current IoTalents team that we have assembled. We have had our share of ups and downs as young start up, but I’m proud to say that we have got a team of amazing people, creating a great place to work. We have a good culture and we have set up for ourselves an environment that works. There are still a lot of work to be done, and I’m sure, more obstacles to overcome. But our team has great spirits, a strong mindset and self-believe which I strongly believe will get us there.

10.   If you could go back in time to speak to your 20-year-old self, what would you tell him?

Dream, Believe, and Just Do It.  When you meet your 40-year-old self later, he will thank you for it.

11.   What’s one productivity hack you can’t live without?

Microsoft Onenote. I love being able to take, compile, read and review my notes across all my devices. I will be so lost without this.
