CEO Interviews - Exclusive for HR Digital Today with market leading HR Tech pioneers - VIDEOMYJOB
David Macciocca, Founder / CEO at VideoMyJob
I’m the Founder and CEO of a two year old Melbourne based start-up, VideoMyJob. I do five things everyday to support the growth of VideoMyJob globally.
A. Build a great company culture where each team member can be their authentic self
B. Bring jobs to life through branded video, quickly and at scale
C. I'm involved in the daily tech stand-up. Building product market fit and aligning leaders and developers not to waste a line of code
D. Take advantage of being first to market, everyday
E. Hockey stick growth
2. What were you doing before this?
I owned a boutique technology recruitment company for 10 years, which I sold in 2015.
We represented amazing technology environments and most assisted with our customers to identify Web and Software Engineers, Quality Assurance (Tester), etc. We focussed on the SDLC space.
3. Describe your product. How does it work?
VideoMyJob is an enterprise video solution that enables you to quickly and easily create, share and track branded video to better engage with jobseekers and employees.
4. What are the key benefits?
One of the key benefits of VideoMyJob is that our tool enables large organisations and globally dispersed teams to scale the in-house production of consistent, quality video that meet branding requirements.
Video is a medium that allows recruiters and employer branding specialists to powerfully convey the benefits of a role and workplace, a picture tells a thousand words, but a video tells a million!
VideoMyJob incorporates a shared dashboard to facilitate collaborative editing, sharing and promotion of company video content, and provide oversight and governance for administrators.
Importantly, our intuitive, beautifully designed and best-in-class mobile app makes professional video production from a smartphone achievable, for amateurs.
POCs on VideoMyJob include
Companies such as Siemens are moving the dial on metrics such as time-to-hire and time-to-fill (see http://blog.videomyjob.com/siemens-human-connection-at-scale)
SEEK pilot (Australia’s largest job board) found that viewers spend 1500% more time on jobs ads with video
Increase in gender diverse applications when underrepresented genders are featured in video job ads
5. Who are your closest competitors?
Digital agencies and anyone with a camera enabled smartphone.
Globally, may organisations haven't implemented video solutions because it's expensive and time consuming to engage with a digital agency but the flip side, ‘selfie style’ recording with a mobile phone, doesn't align with enterprise level branding or reputation requirements. But both smartphones and agencies are our competitors.
6. Who is your first customer and how did that happen? What were they using before this, and why did they switch?
Our first customer was GE, we were introduced via a mutual acquaintance. The talent acquisition team were not producing any video content at the time. GE were the first company to test the performance of video job ads against text job ads. They were blown away with the results, filling jobs faster, and in addition building recognition of their employer brand.
7. What motivated you to start this business?
I believe recruitment is marketing and video (done correctly) is the most powerful form of engagement. When I had my own agency I wanted people to know I had a real job and that we had a great relationship with the hiring manager we were representing. Video ticked all the boxes to push that message out on social platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and job boards.
As an agency we had incredible results. Clients loved the way we represented them and jobseekers loved the insights.
I thought everyone should recruit this way so I put a team together, we built an app and we launched VideoMyJob in April 2016.
8. What is your biggest sacrifice to make this work?
It's a pressure cooker (in a great way) being the Founder and CEO of a fast paced start-up, no two afternoons are the same! In just 2 years we’ve won more than 155 customers in 32 countries.... we are a global first product leading the way in the HR Technology space advocating for organisations to create video job ads. No one other than VideoMyJob is leading the way.
The biggest sacrifice has been with my friends and family. I have three little boys under 7 years old.... ultimately it’s my time with them which is the biggest sacrifice, because of the long hours and international travel required to commit to scaling globally.
9. How did you get funded?
We have boot-strapped through family and friends with a little raise in May 2017 of $1.8 million. I have also sold two properties and I invested the sale of my recruitment company into VideoMyJob post the mini-raise.
10. What has been your most successful form of marketing?
Our customer's videos! The amazing content created by our global customers is our most effective calling card, early on we made the decision to watermark all videos and include a branded outro, many of our leads are either word of mouth referrals or customers who have seen VideoMyJob content on LinkedIn, job boards and career sites and been spurred into action.
11. Describe a typical workday
6:00: walk to work
7:00: arrive at work, coffee and respond to emails
8:45: 15 minutes technology stand-up
9:00 to 11:00: meetings or more emails plus another coffee
12:00: bite to eat
12:35 to 16:00: meetings or emails
16:00: walk back home
17:00: be a dad and husband
20:00 to 22:30: emails, meetings with the US, UK, etc.
12. Who has been the greatest influence in your business and why?
It's hard to single out one person. I'm motivated and influenced by our amazing team and our incredible clients.
Everyday gets better at VideoMyJob because of the innovation we have created. We are really changing the way companies engage with jobseekers.... our technology creates amazing connections which it’s so much fun to be part of :)
13. What has been your proudest moment in the history of your business and why?
100% winning Best Innovation in the 2017 Global Recruiter APAC Awards
14. What is your favourite business failure (and what did you learn from it)?
My greatest business failure was thinking that selling software would be easy… it's actually very different to recruitment. It takes a committed team and real passion to go through the ups and downs of getting a software product off the ground, which is now starting to happen 2 years down the track.
15. If you could go back in time to speak to your 20-year-old self, what would you tell him/her?
Don't change anything, enjoy yourself, and don’t sweat over the growing pains!
16. What’s one productivity hack you can’t live without?
Reading the book "Hooked" by Nir Eyal. It's not a hack, but a great way to look at habit forming software. Highly recommend it to any tech founder
17. Where can people find out more about your product offerings and you online?
