CEO Interviews - Exclusive for HR Digital Today with market leading HR Tech pioneers - POCKET RECRUITER
Randy Moore, Founder / CEO at Pocket Recruiter

1. Please share with us briefly what you do.

I am the CEO and founder of Pocket Recruiter, an AI-based expert sourcing tool. My role is to inspire others, and try to lead by example.

2. What were you doing before this?

Prior to Pocket Recruiter, II was a Founding Partner of a multi-division staffing firm AGS placing permanent and consultants in the technology and Engineering space, working with companies ranging in size from Fortune 500, Fortune 1000, to Start-Ups.

3. In one sentence, how would you describe what your product does?

Pocket Recruiter allows recruiters to focus most of their time and efforts on engaging with candidates, instead of spending all their time searching and sourcing candidates.

Pocket Recruiter is an AI-based expert sourcing system capable of learning to read job descriptions and assess and select candidates like a human recruiter.

4. How did the idea for your business come about?

When I was managing my staffing firm, I would go into the offices and most recruiters were not on the phone, or engaging with candidates via some form of messaging channel. I would ask “why not”, and they would answer that they are spending all their time trying to find people to engage. They spent countless hours on it.. I started myself going from job board to job board, social network to social network, searching and sourcing candidates for my recruiters to engage with.

I just knew there had to be a better more efficient way. We were in danger of forgetting the art of recruitment, so I started looking into the available tech at that time. As nothing quite solved our problem to the level we needed, I met with a CTO of a startup software company who was also one of my best clients. Together we decided to build a product to help my teams and address the challenges of the hiring managers. In the end, we decided to offer our product to the public to try to help other recruiters solve this problem.

5. How does it work?

Pocket Recruiter is an expert sourcing system capable of learning to read your job descriptions like a human recruiter, to understand what’s most important and what’s required of a qualified candidate. Pocket Recruiter then searches multiple internal and external candidate sources, evaluates and identifies the most qualified candidates without any human intervention. It learns from all historical data and recruiter’s actions (what is important, who was selected, who was rejected and why, who was put forward to interview, who was hired, who was hired by whom, what are the similarities, what set them apart, for example), then adjusts the subsequent searches automatically, to bring back even more suitable candidates.

6. What are the key benefits that your product brings?

We replace time-consuming, repeatable actions and allow recruiters - through the learning - to deliver better results faster, therefore saving time to focus on more high value, differentiating activities and creating space to apply creativity and emotional intelligence.

It is this combination of automation and learning that helps Pocket Recruiter clients to achieve some remarkable results: time to shortlist reduced to 20 minutes, interviews up by 24%, time on engaging with candidates and qualifying jobs increased by 40%, leading to significant financial gains through savings on 3rd party costs and increased revenues.

7. Who are your closest competitors?

I am not a big fan on speaking about other companies. Instead I focus on our performance and how we can improve what we deliver to our customers. There are a lot of good people in our space, I wish them all the best.

8. Who is your first customer and how did that happen?

ARM, a division of Serocor. I met their Head of Marketing at a show in Orlando, FL. We demo'd the product, and they requested a trial. They then trialled 10 different matching engines and chose us as we uniquely combine results from our AI with an innovative and smooth UI that is easy to use for recruiters.

9. What were they using before this, and why did they switch?

They were working with a CRM only at the that point. We were able to improve their time to short list from 1-3 days to 15 to 20 minutes.

10. How does the Asia market influenced your overall strategy?

We see a major trend to adopt new technology into their talent acquisition strategy, specifically ML/AI.

Pocket definitely sees the Asian Market as a big opportunity, and are currently in the initial stages of engagement with a few Big Clients there already.

11. What’s your business focus for this year?

To continually improve the experience for our existing clients. Improve the product by introducing further automation. Focus on our global expansion.

12. What is your favourite failure (and what did you learn from it)?

Man, I have had many to choose from. I am a huge fan of self evaluation: “where am I falling short, and how can I improve in that specifically”. Then I spend most of my time focusing on all the positives, which include the fact that I correct short comings.

13. What’s one productivity hack you would recommend to everyone?

Be prepared each and every day. Then it’s all about execution

14. Where can people find out more about your product offerings and you online?
