CEO Interviews - exclusive for HR Digital Today with market leading HR Tech pioneers - SHIFT

Mark Pickard, CEO/Co-Founder, SHIFTJOBAPP

According to a survey conducted by Indeed, more job searches are increasingly done on mobile. In fact 6.5 out of 10 job searches worldwide is taking place on mobile devices.

This is very significant for employers as platforms stickiness are usually not not transferable. That is if candidates use their mobile phone to search for jobs, they will continue from that device and is unlikely to ‘transfer’ their application to a desktop.

It make perfect sense to focus on a mobile centric solution and that is what SHIFT sets out to do.

We interview CEO and co-founder Mark Pickard to learn more.

1. Please share with us briefly what you do.

As the CEO, I work with a dedicated team on a Tinder style professional career (job)

matching platform called SHIFT. We want to make looking for a career faster, easy and social

through the ecosystem that we are helping to create. We do so by matching the right talent to the right internships and professional full-time jobs in Singapore and targeted to launch in other

nearby countries in 2018.

2. What were you doing before this?

For the last four years prior to the launch of SHIFT we were busy design and building apps

for companies that were looking to upgrade from web only to mobile applications. Our most

notable clients are Singapore Press Holdings (ST Property) and the Singapore Night Race

(Singapore GP). We have also worked with ASTAR in developing and elderly care monitoring

3. In one sentence, how would you describe what your product does?

SHIFT brings smart talent and great opportunities together in a simple, fast, social job

matching platform.

4. How did the idea for your business come about?

All these experiences that I gathered over the years in the working world made me realize

how a better job matching process can make things so much easier for both HR personnel and

job seekers.

As a job seeker myself, I understand how daunting and sometimes hopeless it can

feel when you are putting yourself out there, facing the uncertainties of ever finding a job. That

made me want to do something to make things better.

5. How does it work?

For a job seeker, just download SHIFT on the app stores (Android, IOS), register and

complete their profile (resume). That profile will be the one and only resume they need

regardless of which job they want to apply.

Once their profile is completed, they are ready to apply for a job, by simply swiping up on the job card. The application process takes no more than 3 seconds.

Job seekers can also swipe right to shortlist and swipe left to pass. Once a hiring manager matches with the job seeker we open up the ability for the hiring manager to directly chat and set up interviews in the SHIFT application.

6. What are the key benefits that your product brings?

SHIFT is all about speed, mobility, communication, and smart automation. We are really into

helping job seekers find a job within the shortest time possible by cutting short the amount of

time needed to do up a profile and apply.

Our focus is to be here for the job seekers that creates an atmosphere that gives confidence and quick responses regarding the positions that seekers apply to.

7. Who are your closest competitors?

It’s the first generation job boards like ST Jobs and JobsDB. We built SHIFT so that the job

seeker does not have to go through the same painful process of filling out long forms, uploading

resumes and submitting their application.

In SHIFT once you complete your profile you can easily submit an application by swiping up on a great opportunity.

8. Who is your first customer and how did that happen?

SHIFT launched in July and we were fortunate to have a relationship with NUS because

Sethu a co-founder had graduated from NUS in the School of Computing and many current

students and alumni downloaded and use SHIFT to find internships and full-time jobs.

Today we have over 100 awesome internships, and over 3000 professional full-time jobs.

9. What were they using before this, and why did they shift (pun intended)?

For internships many of our job seekers were using InternSG and Glints before they made

the switch to SHIFT. For the full-time professional positions they were using job boards, like

Monster, JobsDB and ST Jobs.

10. How do you price your product?

We will be launching our pricing model in January. Until then, companies are welcome to

post unlimited internships and professional jobs free.

In January companies simply add their credit cards into SHIFT and they will be given their first 30 days of posting jobs free and then only S$49 per month (30 days) for unlimited intern and full-time job postings.

We will be updating the public soon on this very important SHIFT milestone.

11. What’s your business focus for this year?

At the end of 2017, we will be continuing to focus on professional job seekers and great

companies (Start-Ups, Small, Medium, Large and Multinational companies) . We are on track to

have over 600 companies and over 3000 job seekers by the end of this year.

12. What’s one productivity tip/app/tool you can't live without?

It’s for sure without a doubt “WhatsApp”. That is how I connect with my family, the SHIFT

team and even many job seekers from Singapore and even Malaysia!

13. Where can people find out more about your product offerings and you online?

They can stay connected with us via Facebook at and also SHIFT website

We love it when we receive messages from people whether it’s an enquiry, support, feedback or tips on bettering their chance of a match on SHIFT. We are also partnering with great teams like DGG Resume and People Mentality who are both focused on helping job seekers maximize their potential and opportunities.

Please feel free to reach out to me at or even find me on Whatsapp to stay connected.
